This novel "in-office" laser therapy is designed to treat the vaginal and vulvar effects of estrogen deficiency, a condition referred to a Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) or Vulvo-Vaginal Atrophy (VVA).

What is VVA or GSM?

This is the thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to a decrease in estrogen. It occurs most often after menopause, but can develop during breast-feeding or at other times when the body's estrogen production declines; perimenopause, surgical menopause as a result of removal of both ovaries, after pelvic radiation for cancer, after chemotherapy for cancer or as a side effect of breast cancer hormonal treatment. For many women, atrophy makes intercouse unpleasant, and thus may result in a reduction in sex drive. The most common symptoms are:

  • Vaginal dryness and loss of lubrication with arousal
  • Painful intercourse
  • Vaginal itching and burning
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Light bleeding after intercourse
  • Laxity of the vaginal canal
  • Shortening or tightening of the vaginal canal
  • Loss of subcutaneous fat of the labia that can result in narrowing of the vaginal opening and changes of around the clitoris and urethra
  • Burning with urination
  • Urgency with urination
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections as a result of the change in vaginal pH and natural bacterial flora

Who is effected?

For many women, atrophy makes intercouse unpleasant, and thus may result in a reduction in sex drive. The most common symptoms are:

  • Women who have undergone total hysterectomy (removal of ovaries and uterus)
  • Breast cancer survivors who are unable to safely use estrogen replacement
  • Women who are tired of using messy and inconvenient vaginal creams and lubricants
  • Women who simply want the condition of their vaginal/vulvar tissues to return to a pre-menopausal state without the risk of side effects.

Did you know?

  • Only 4% of postmenopausal women who report vaginal symptoms could identify them as symptoms of vaginal atrophy
  • 75-80% of women with GSM considered the impact on their lives to be negative
  • 77% of 4000 women surveyed in a study believed that women are uncomfortable discussing the symptoms of GSM
  • It is estimated that by 2025, there will be 1.1 billion women over 50 years of age worldwide with needs related to GSM

How does it work?

This medical laser delivers controlled energy to the vaginal and vulvar tissue creating an minor "injury" to the tissue which stimulates a healing response which results in increasing the blood flow to the tissues, ingrowth of new collagen and elastin, which are essential to vaginal health. This is similar to the laser used to treat aging facial skin. In fact tissue studies have demonstrated the improvement in the vaginal tissues after the treatment.
